How To Protect Yourself From Supercookies

by Fast-teks of Atlanta on Monday, September 12, 2011

Everybody loves cookies, those little packets of code that websites leave in your browser. We love them because they make Web browsing more convenient by saving our usernames, passwords and other unique data from one session to the next. Marketing companies love them because they uniquely identify visitors and can be combined with traffic logs to compile a profile of your interests and browsing habits.

As long as you are a willing participant, this sort of tracking can be a good thing; browser cookies allow online retailers to tailor their websites to your needs and ensures you are more likely to see advertisements for products and services relevant to your interests. The problem is that lots of unscrupulous companies are using underhanded techniques to sneak cookies into your browser even when you don't want them. They're called supercookies, and they can be stopped with a few free utilities and some simple precautions. Click Here To Read Full Article.

Computer Equipment & Thunderstorms...

by Fast-teks of Atlanta on Monday, September 5, 2011

During thunderstorms many people leave their computer unprotected, just turning a computer off during a thunderstorm does very little to protect it unless you have a good surge protector in place. Power surges can also do incremental damage to electronics, so the computer works okay most of the time, but occasionally acts up. This type of fault is hard to diagnose or fix, so when storms approach the best idea is to turn off the computer and unplug it from the wall or if you are not home have a good surge protector in place.

All electronics are very sensitive to power surges, not just your computer. One of the most sensitive parts of a computer network is your cable or DSL modem. DSL modems are particularly susceptible to power surges because they can be hit by surges though both the electrical lines and the phone lines. Make sure to protect these devices with a surge protector or if you are home during a storm unplug them for full protection.

If your computer equipment is not currently protected, it’s recommended that you buy and install a surge protector. I have two recommendations, the first is a surge protector that has enough room for all those big power adapters and includes phone line protection. My other recommendation is for the heavy user, a battery backup plus all of the surge protection will allow you to save your work and shutdown in the event of a power outage.
